Verbatim Meaning of the Abhangas :-
Abhanga 1:-
I have decided that While I am doing all my duties in the world, O Govinda my mind is totally concentrated on you. I know that it is difficult to live like this ( where one has to live in two different state one that of living in the word and the other the state of keeping the mind at the Holy Feet of the Lord). But with your Blessings I can do this , hence Bless me with suitable intellect for the same. I have surrendered to you Totally and the responsibly of looking after my Family is now yours. I will now do everything by remembering you through your Holy Name.

Abhanga 2:-

I am mad with the love for the Panduranga . And because f this all my works are being done effortlessly . I treat the wealth of others and the women like poison. Tuka says that this does not cause any interference for living normal life in this world.

Background Information to understand the true meaning of the Abhanga:-

In our earlier post ( 73) we have seen how to continuously keep ourselves aware of the Lord. In these two Abhangas, the same subject is addressed in more details.

The first Abhanga describes the disciple who has totally surrendered to the Almighty.
And
The second one describes the experience after this total surrender.

The form of worship by recitation and remembering the name of Lord finally gets converted to the state where the relationship gets converted into the form of worship where The Lord and The disciple are friends. Such examples are seen in the Epic Mahabharata where Lord Krishna and Arjuna were friends, another example is that of the woman Saint Meerabai, Mahabharata also describes the friendship between The Cowherds and Lord Krishna, Uddhva and Krishna.

Below given Stanza from 11 th chapter of SrimadBhagavadgeeta describes how a Disciple who has totally surrendered to the Lord behaves in this world.
मत्कर्मकृन्मत्परमो मद्भक्त: सङ्गवर्जित:
निर्वैर: सर्वभूतेषू य: स मामेति पाण्डव ॥ ११-५५॥
He who does work for Me alone and has Me for his goal, is devoted to Me, is freed from attachment, and bears enmity towards no creature-- he enters into Me O'Pandava. || 11-55||

When the meaning of the first Abhanga is seen, it brings out a unique aspect to our knowledge, that Tukaram Maharaj has described in very simple word the same aspects that are addressed in the above sited Stanza of Srimad Bhagavadgeeta.
Meaning of the Abhnaga :-

In the very First line of the Abhanga; it is clarified that one need not forgo his duties in the world,. All one has to change is the mental attitude.

As long as one says that “ I am the Doer, I did this or that “ then one is taking all-the ownership of such deeds. When one does something there is an expectation of the result of such an action .If the results are as per our expectations the we feel Happy ,otherwise we feel unhappy, sad of even dejected.
We enjoy or suffer because of the results that arise out of the actions done by ourselves.

Further , because we claim the ownership of the action and the results; if the results do not happen in this bithtime then we have to comeback to enjoy or suffer from the results .

The only remedy for this is to surrender to the Lord totally and pray to Him that He should get all the works done fromus as per His desire and Plan. It is well known fact that the Lord takes care of such a Disciple in every aspect of life. ( In fact Lord has given this promise as mentioned in the Bhagavadgeeta)

However it should be remembered that at least at the initial stage of surrendering, one should not Forget the Lords Doership. Tukaram Maharaja has understood this point and says this point clearly at the end of the first Abhanga.

The next Abhanga describes the results , effects of that all the works and Duties in the word were discharged properly . Tukaram Maharaj says that this was possible because He had meditated contemplated only on the Lord Panduranga and did nothing else.

Since the Lord Himself has became the Doer, enjoy-er of all; the actions; Tukaram Maharaj says the he never gets disturbed because of Favorable or Un favorable results of the actions done by him. His mind is experiencing pure Bliss and Peace .

In the next line Maharaj has used two specific words “ Others wealth and Others Women” . We need to see the real meaning behind these words first. These meanings are as described further below.

Others wealth ::- This mean a desire for money or wealth.
Others women :- This means the information received by our five organs from external objects in the world.

1) Eyes receive the aspects of Beauty
  1. The tongue gets the Taste and flavors
  2. The sense of Touch is received by our whole skin or parts thereof
  3. Nose receives the smells
  4. ears re3ceive the sounds which are sweet to us.
Our mind always craves for the enjoyments earned through these sense organs and that is called Women in the abhanga.

Generally when one has lot of money , then the tendency is to pay attention to those activities which will give one pleasures .This can cause immense damage ultimately like poison, ;if one does not exercise some control. .

Tukaram Maharaja says that (because he had become addicted to meditate on the Lord who is everywhere) now he understands the above and therefore he is no more controlled by these sense organ and their objects.

After describing the results of his love for God, tukaram maharaj has ended the Abhanga by speaking about ,telling his own experience.
He says that the duties to be performed in the world towards family etc ; do not interfere with mental state of performing worship of the Lord as described in the abhanga.

Teaching of this Abhanga :-

All the Saints have always based their preachings on their sole experiences only. Same is applicable to the above abhangas too.

By describing his own experience h; Tukaram Maharaj has obliged us and we should show our gratitude by following his advise and performing the worship Lord Almighty. In my opinion , this is the teaching here too.
