न ये तुज जरी तुज मधुर उत्तर । दिधला सुस्वर नाहीं देवें ॥ १ ॥

नाहिं तयाविण भुकेला विठ्ठल । येईल तैसा बोल रामकृष्ण ॥ २॥

देवापाशी मागे आवडिची भक्ती । विश्वासेंशी प्रीती भावबळें ॥ ३ ॥

तुका म्हणें मना सांगतो विचार । धरावा निर्धार दिसेदिस ॥ ४॥

Verbatim Meaning :-

Even-though you are not having ability to sing with a sweet voice ; Though God has not blessed you with sweet voice || 1 ||

( Still it does not matter) Say Ramakrishna with love . God desires only a call made with love || 2||

If you want to ask Him for something , ask for the Love for Him with good faith || 3||

Tukaa says O'Mind I am telling you a thought to follow. Make a decision to do something with full determination || 4||

Background Information for understanding the meaning:-

Our Saints, Seers and Scriptures have repeatedly said that our birth as a human being is mainly for the purpose of Self Realization. This process starts in everybody's life on some day or the other because of some reason. It may the curiosity of a Scientific mind about the creation of Universe and mans position therein, or mostly one wants to get rid of sufferings permanently.

Everybody will agree that there is some Universal Consciousness which runs the affairs of the whole universe. We call Him by the general names such as “ God, Divine, Nature “ etc.

Our saints have given us guidance for achieving the state of unity with the universal consciousness which enables one to transcend the time and all other dimensions. This is called Liberation or Mokshaa.

Tukarama Maharaja has given us a hint in this Abhanga for achieving the goal of Liberation through BhaktI or love for the God.

A Question can arise as who can do this ? For whom is this Abhanga addressed?.What is to be done?

And the answer for all above questions is very simple.

It is :- “ One who is desirous of achieving Liberation but has to perform all his Worldly duties is the one for whom this abhanga is addressed. “.

Meaning of the Abhanga :-

In the first two stanzas of this Abhanga , Tukarama maharaj says that what is needed to develop the devotion for god is the mental Attitude of Love for Him.

This feeling of love should be of pure and undemanding quality. Shri. Ramakrishna Paramhansa says that this quality can be understood if f one combines the love felt by a mother for her child, Chaste wife 's love for her husband and the love with which a Greedy person has for money and wealth.

This gives us the idea of the love felt by a divotee towards the God.

When such feeling of love and devotion is developed in the mind ; then such devotee does not desire for anything other that association with his God. He accepts every event and incident happening in his life as the will and wish of his God. All he does is to remember the God

Tukaram Maharaj is telling us here to remember God with this attitude of mind. He says that you may call his name such as “ Ramakrishna “ for this purpose. In order to remember it is not ne4cessary to sing his Bhajans( Songs of Devotion). One need not have a sweet voice. All that is required is calling Him with LOVE. God is also desirous of such love.

In the 3^rd and 4^th stanza of the Abhanga , Tukaram maharaj is advising us to tell a thought to our mind. He says that if we want to ask something to the God , ask for such devotion. Decide with determination that you will do this everyday and implement it as well.

This also means that to develop such intense devotion we have do do a numbar of efforts daily. These efforts are as follows.

1. Not to forget Him at any moment. For this purpose develop a habit of reciting His name in the mind 2) Develop the attitude that I will put my best efforts for whatever undertaking I do and will not worry of the outcome. I will accept the outcome whatever it may be. 3) Remember that whatever happens is as per the will and wish of God , know that it happens for my welfare only.

If one puts all his efforts in this fashion, with utter faith; then the day of Liberation is not far for him

Teaching of the Abhanga :-One should always remember God is the teaching of this abhanga.
