Background information :-
Consider a case , where
God appears in front of us. What shall we ask Him ? Most of us may
not know what to ask for.
If we should understand the
basic difference between a Prayer and a Request , then the
meaning of the becomes very clear.
The Prayer is always made to some one on whom we have full faith and
confidence that our demand will be met without any hesitation from
the Giver.
On the other hand when we make a request , we are not sure whether it
will be granted or not.
For true disciple , the GOD Almighty is his Mother. Thus he feels
free to ask anything to Her. Since Mother knows what is good for her
child she always strives to give the when it asks for such things.
It is customary to recite the
second Abhanga at the end of every spiritual discource of the
Warkari Sampradaya in Maharashtra.
With these aspects in the back ground; we can say that the first
Abhanga is a Prayer while the second Abhanga describes to us what a
true disciple feels about Recitation or Sing songs about the Glory of
GOD.
Meaning of the Abhangas :-
In the very first line of the first Abhanga ; Tukarama Maharaj, has
prayed to God. He says that O'GOD give me a boon that I should not
forget you. Further in the Third line He also prays for Holy company
of the Saints.
Also he clarifies in the third line that he does not wish for any
material wealth, or even liberation from the cycle of Birth-death.
As seen in earlier Abhangas; if one recites Holy name of God, or
follows the preachings written in the literature of various saints ,
then one automatically remains always is in the company of GOD.
Same aspect are again
brought forward in the Abhanga when Tukarama Maharaj says that he
will like sing about the Glory of GOD, about GOD's various qualities,
simply recites His Holy Name, or serving the needy people around us.
At this stage just the verbal meaning of the second Abhanga is
sufficient. In the second Abhanga Tukarama Maharaj has told us about
the sweetness of GOD's holy name. He has given us the examples of a
calf, a pearl
The abhanga says :-
a) The Lotus flower does
not know about it's own fragrance. Only a Bee enjoys it.
b) The cow eats grass
and gives milk. Only the calf knows the real sweetness of this milk.
It has no other comparison.
c) Pearl is born in a
mother of pearl (shell) but the mother does not know the beauty of
the pearl produced. Only the real connesiur knows the value and
beauty of the pearl.though the shell does not enjoy it 's presence.
\
Similarly O 'God , you
do not know the sweetness of your own name. We your disciples only
know about your sweetness of uttering your name.
We know that unless
there is a duality ie. a separation
between GOD and a disciple; the disciple will not be able to perform
the acts of any worship.
This is the real state
of almost everybody who is not Truly
Liberated. For such a person Praying is the only method available
for making progress in the path of spirituality.
Coming back to the fourth line
of the first Abhanga we find here that Tukaram Maharja has prayed GOD
to give him Human birth again. Why? So that He will always enjoy the
bliss because of singing about the glory of God.
Teachings Of the Abhanga
:-
The Abhanga guides and
teaches us about “What should we pray for?.”
It
also enables us to examine our own expectations when we start to
tread on the path of spirituality. since only in
this human form we have a chance to attain liberation.
But most of the mankind
gets attracted towards the worldly pleasures and misses the unique
opportunity available to us.
